Iconography Study Evening Retreats
Starting in June 2024, we will be offering classes, events, and demonstrations twice a month to bring people together for fellowship and learning in iconography at St. George Greek Orthodox Church. Classes will vary in cost and length of time but will generally be a late afternoon/evening event. Cost posted with each upcoming class.
We will continue to build in development of the icon by teaching these class studies. There are many subtle yet important concepts that are necessary to help students fully understand what an Icon is and developing skill. The revelation of iconic light is one that grows with experience both in painting and deepening spiritual development. These words are that of encouragement and love to never doubt seeking such work in the Light of of Christ’s resurrection.
We hope you will join us in furthering your training and knowledge in the icon’s journey.
Materials- St. George will have Ampersand gesso boards for all study classes/ at cost. Cost posted in this pdf. It is expected that you come with your own paint and brushes supplied in previous classes. You can also bring your unfinished icons that you may be working on.
Schedule
Face of an Icon: Tuesday June 11, 2024; 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm
Introduction into and review of drawing the face of an icon. Students will learn the traditional formula for drawing and painting faces. Starting with the formulaic frontal pose, the class will draw together step by step an angel face, or work on your icons in progress. Class will be 3.5 hours/ $45.00
A Study of Hair: Thursday June 27th, 2024; 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm
This study will look at various patterns of hair defining different types of personages in icons. We will use the same supplies as above. We will learn designs and patterns of hair by teaching the different treatments of hair. Class will be 3.5 hours/ $45.00.
Hands and Feet: Tuesday July 9, 2024; 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm
This study focuses on the structure and formula of the hands and feet. We will draw up to three positions of each and compare styles from different schools of iconography. Class will be 3 hours/ $35.00.
Clothing: Thursday August 8, 2024; 5:00 pm to 8:30 pm
This study focuses on the structure and formula of the clothing of the Byzantine icon and its schools of iconography. Special attention is given to interior light and its patterns and formulas seen repeatedly in the clothing of the icon figure. The practice of creating transparent light will provide increased understanding in the devlopment of color, light and form. In this course we will draw a full length figure. Class will be 3.5 hours/ $45.00.
