Basilica Annual Icon Festival
The Basilica Annual Icon Festival begins on the Sunday of All Saints Day in the Western Catholic Church with a solemn procession of icons during the 9:30am and 11:30am Mass at the Basilica of Saint Mary, Minneapolis, Minnesota. The event opens with a procession of icons during the liturgy commemorating the feast of All Saints Day in the Catholic Church. The mission of the Icon festival has been to bring Orthodox icons into the Catholic community; ministering and bringing witness to the place of importance of the icon in Orthodox liturgy, in private daily prayer and in the art world. The festival and its exhibit are an annual cooperative venture between the Basilica of Saint Mary and Icon Art Studios with outreach and support from various members and churches in the Orthodox community and other faith communities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Icons are borrowed from private collections and churches in the area. After the procession into the church, the icons are placed in the area surrounding the old high altar reminiscent of an ancient iconostasis or screen of icons traditional in the Orthodox Church.
